International small-parcel reference

DDP questions, answered clearly.

Clear answers about DDP, DAP, IOSS, US and EU import changes, battery-product reviews, chargeable weight, transit windows and quote inclusions.

What does DDP mean in international small-parcel shipping?

DDP means Delivered Duty Paid. Under Incoterms® 2020, the seller arranges delivery to the named destination and is responsible for import clearance, duties and applicable import taxes. BiaoJu coordinates the agreed logistics services for the seller; the sales contract and logistics quotation serve different purposes.

Your BiaoJu quotation should show how those services and payments are arranged, with the named destination, importer setup, required documents and any separately priced work made clear before booking.

  • Common exclusions can include remote-area fees, address corrections, returns, storage, oversize handling and penalties caused by inaccurate shipment data.
  • Product legality, labeling and compliance still need to be reviewed for the destination market.

Current-scope note: A logistics quote does not change the meaning of DDP. If the buyer is expected to handle import clearance and pay import duties or taxes, the delivery term must be clarified rather than described as standard DDP.

What is the difference between DDP, DAP and a dedicated small-parcel line?

A dedicated line describes how parcels move. DDP and DAP describe how costs, customs responsibilities and delivery obligations are allocated in the commercial arrangement.

DDU is an older expression that is often used informally for a scope similar to DAP, but current agreements should use the actual agreed Incoterms® rule and named place.

How is US DDP small-parcel shipping charged?

The starting point is usually the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. A route may then add handling, customs, duties, delivery and shipment-specific surcharges.

Illustrative structure: chargeable weight × route rate + handling + duties/customs scope + applicable surcharges

  • The volumetric divisor is route-specific. Values such as 5,000, 6,000 or 8,000 are examples, not a universal rule.
  • Ask whether pickup, fuel, clearance, duties, residential delivery, remote-area service and returns are included or excluded.
  • Use the same product, carton dimensions, weight and postcode when comparing quotations.

Current-scope note: US low-value import treatment changed on 29 August 2025. Do not assume that a parcel valued at or below US$800 is automatically duty-free; use a current route review.

What is the difference between EU IOSS and DDP?

IOSS is an EU VAT simplification for eligible distance sales of imported goods. DDP is a responsibility arrangement used in a commercial delivery contract. They solve different parts of the transaction and should not be treated as interchangeable.

  • IOSS generally applies to eligible B2C consignments with an intrinsic value not exceeding €150 and does not apply to excise goods.
  • Under IOSS, VAT is collected at checkout and reported through the scheme. The carrier and customs data still need to match the transaction.
  • A DDP quote should separately state the import arrangement, duties, VAT, data requirements and exceptions.

Current-scope note: From 1 July 2026, the EU applies a temporary €3 customs duty per item category in low-value consignments under €150 until the new customs data hub is expected in 2028. Confirm how the current route handles it.

Can battery products ship through a DDP route?

Some battery products can move through reviewed channels, but DDP does not replace dangerous-goods rules. Eligibility depends on the battery chemistry, energy rating, quantity, configuration, condition, packaging, origin and destination.

  • Prepare the product name and photos, battery type, capacity or watt-hours, cell count and whether the battery is installed, packed with equipment or shipped alone.
  • The review may require a UN 38.3 test summary, SDS or MSDS, packaging information and confirmation that the battery is new and undamaged.
  • Power banks, standalone batteries, lithium-metal batteries, lithium-ion batteries and batteries installed in equipment can follow different rules.

Current-scope note: Air-transport requirements changed again in 2026, including state-of-charge provisions for some lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment and battery-powered vehicles. Approval must be route-specific.

Who pays remote-area fees, returns or additional taxes?

For a DDP sale, import duties and applicable import taxes are the seller’s responsibility. Separate costs between the seller and logistics provider—such as a return, address change or storage—need their own agreed charge basis. They should not be confused with routine import charges collected from the recipient.

  • Remote-area and residential fees should be checked against the destination postcode.
  • Address corrections, refused delivery and failed-delivery returns should have a stated owner and charge basis.
  • Extra duties caused by a tariff decision, corrected classification or inaccurate declaration need an agreed escalation process.
  • Storage, inspection, destruction and return-to-origin costs should be listed as included, excluded or quoted after the event.

How long does delivery to the US, UK or Germany take?

Delivery time depends on the origin city, product, flight or line-haul availability, customs release, destination postcode and last-mile capacity. The starting event also matters: pickup, warehouse acceptance and carrier handover are not the same date.

  • Request a current estimate for the actual destination and product. Confirm whether it starts at warehouse acceptance or carrier handover and whether days are business or calendar days.
  • Peak periods, customs inspections, data errors, weather, remote postcodes and last-mile exceptions can add time.
  • Use the service window in your dated quotation. It reflects the selected route and shipment profile rather than a country-wide promise, and is not a delivery guarantee.

Does a DDP quote include duties, VAT and every surcharge?

A DDP sale puts import clearance, duties and applicable import taxes on the seller, not the recipient. BiaoJu’s logistics quote should make these costs and payment arrangements explicit. DDP does not mean that every later change, return or additional warehouse service is included in the original logistics price.

  • Ask for the transport, handling, import and delivery breakdown, with quote validity and currency stated.
  • Identify remote-area delivery, address corrections, storage, inspections and returns separately, including how extra work is approved.
  • The quoted scope applies only to correctly described and lawfully declared goods.
  • Incorrect descriptions, values or documents may require a new review; BiaoJu cannot confirm a route on inaccurate shipment data.

How do I choose a reliable DDP small-parcel provider?

Look for a provider that can explain the route in writing, identify uncertainty and show how exceptions are handled. An unusually low headline rate is not useful if the operating scope is unclear.

  • Checks product eligibility before quoting and records required documents.
  • Explains actual versus volumetric weight and every minimum charge.
  • Uses accurate product descriptions, values and tariff information.
  • Provides traceable handoffs, exception follow-up and a clear claims or returns process.
  • Supports a small route test before a larger launch when practical.

Current-scope note: Avoid guaranteed customs outcomes, impossible transit promises or requests to misdeclare the shipment.
